How to Set up an FTP Client

An FTP Client allows you to connect directly to your server directory without having to navigate through the server control panel.  There are several programs to choose from, below is a few options to get you started:

Install the program.

As this option is a separate program, you will need to follow the installation instructions from the chosen FTP client's website.

Download and install your chosen FTP Client.  We will be using FIleZilla from here out to illustrate the process.

Connecting to your server with FileZilla.

Now that you have installed the FileZilla, you can connect to your server in one of two ways: 'Quick Connect' or by adding your login credentials in the 'Site Manager'

For either connection type you will need to get your FTP login information from the server control panel.

  • Navigate to the server control panel and locate the 'Files' tab along the left navigation bar.
  • Select 'FTP File Access'

  • This will take you to the FTP login screen
  • Note down the information for connecting later - you will need your IP Address, Username, & Password (the port will always be 21)

Connecting with Quickconnect.

We will use the quickconnect bar, located just below the main tool bar.

  • Use ´21´ as the 'Port'
  • Press the 'Quickconnect' button.
  • If this connected correctly it will bring up the server's main directory.

Connecting through the Site Manager.

The Site Manager command is located under the File menu. You can also press Ctrl+S or Command+S.

  • From here you will want to click 'New site' and name it.
  • Use the login credentials saved earlier as follows in the appropriate fields.
  • Use your IP Address in the 'Host' field
  • Use your FTP Username in the 'User' field
  • Use your Multicraft Password in the 'Password' field
  • Use ´21´ as the 'Port'
  • Logon type should be set to 'Normal'
  • Select 'Use explicit FTP over TLS if available.'

  • If you have several servers, you may want to select a unique background color to be able to quickly tell them apart.
  • You will generally not need to modify any of the other settings.
  • Click on the 'Connect' button
  • If this connected correctly it will bring up the server's main directory.

Additional Settings.

Below are a few common settings to adjust.  These can be found in the main settings - 'FileZilla -> Settings'

  • One common issue with an FTP client is failed file transfers due to connection timeout. You can adjust how long the client will try to connect before timing out - be sure not to set this too high as it may cause the program to seemingly freeze. The default setting is 30 seconds, and would only need to be adjusted if your connection speed is not fast enough to initiate the data transfer in the timeout period.

  • Another useful setting is 'File editing'.  Click on the 'Browse...' button and navigate to your preferred file editor.

There are several programs to choose from for editing .yml and most filetype associated with your server.  The program you choose has to be able to properly maintain the original formatting.  Below are a couple of options to get you started.
